“What is the meaning of life? To be happy and useful.” – Dalai Lama

One of the best ways to be happy and useful is to share what you know and what you’re good at. Writing a book can be a great way to do that. The best natural health self-help books take readers on a transformational journey that not only inspires but educates and informs. To do this you need a plan (in addition to your plan of how you’re going to write your book) that you’ve used in real-life with your clients or patients that gets results.

No to Yes

Beat Sugar Addiction Now! and the series that followed that I co-write with holistic doctor Jacob Teitelbaum, MD didn’t start out with a plan. It was more a general way of dealing with sugar addiction. I remember the call that we had with the publishing team about our book. The conversation was going well but they had not said yes. The idea of beating sugar addiction was a good one – in fact they came to me with the idea - but we hadn’t yet clearly defined the method or plan.

When the call was almost over and we still had not heard yes, Dr. Teitelbaum said something like, “There are four different types of sugar addicts.” Immediately the publishers got excited. This led to a book deal and a book that became a Quarto USA bestseller.

Specifics Matter

Why did they get excited? Because while before we had a general way of dealing with sugar addiction, now they had specifics. Specifics matter. We now had a way of  develop a plan to get readers from A to B. And we did.

This book led to four others in the series. Take a look at the Table of Contents for The Complete Book of Sugar Addiction.  It’s a complete plan that leads the reader from where she is now to where she wants to be.

What’s Your Plan?

Now, think about your method, plan or approach, the one you use with clients or patients. Does it have steps that readers can take to achieve results? Can you clarify each step or combine it with others?

If readers follow your steps will they be changed or transformed in some meaningful way? Think about this and write down your thoughts and experiences about this. Your plan can be the core of your self-help book.
