The 10 Step Roadmap to Write Your Natural Health Self-Help Book
Thinking of writing a natural health self-help book? If you are, it’s important to know what steps you need to take. Where are you on your book writing journey?
💡 1. The Idea: What problem will your book solve? Will it help people be happier, be calmer or go vegan? Is your idea unique or do you have a new angle on an old topic?
Try this exercise: My natural health self-help book will help people who have (chronic pain/allergies/stress)_________________feel better through (your unique take, whether it's mind-body-spirit, yoga poses, aromatherapy or an integrative, functional medicine or holistic approach)_____________to ease/improve/boost___________________(takes away pain point or problem.
📝 2. The Method: This is a step-by-step plan that leads to a positive result. Do you have one that works for your clients or patients? This can be the basis for a book.
Try this exercise: My natural health self-help book will help my ideal reader feel better mentally or emotionally or physically (or maybe all three) though my method or plan which is a combination of _________ and ______________and ____________.
📖 3. The Structure: A book needs to be structured so that readers experience a transformational journey. The framework is a Table of Contents. This helps readers know what actions to take to experience the results you promise. A TOC typically contains an Introduction, How to Use this Book, and 10-20 chapters.
🗣️ 4. The Tone: You need to be authoritative and share your expertise with readers but also be conversational and friendly and not overly technical. Jargon is a no-go.
🎯 5. The Audience: Although you may think your book is for everyone, the best way to write and sell it is to decide who it’s best for or who will benefit most. That’s your ideal reader.
📬 6. The Book Proposal and the Pitch: A marketing document, this sells your book idea to an agent who can sell it to a publisher. The pitch is the query letter that engages initial interest from agents, who may then request the book proposal. It needs to be informative, persuasive, and compelling. (Self-publishing? Skip to Step 7.)
📄 7. The Manuscript: This is the natural health self-help book itself. In traditional publishing, this is written after the book has been sold and you’re under contract, not beforehand (unless you’re self-publishing).
✏️8. The Rewrite: Writing is rewriting. It’s normal to do several revisions of your manuscript before it’s ready for publication.
✅ 9. The Edit: It’s best not to do this yourself. There are different kinds of editors. A developmental editor structures a book and each chapter so that it delivers on its premise, is clear, concise, actionable and reader friendly. Copy editors correct grammar and spelling line by line and fact check. Proofreaders check for typos and other mistakes and make sure your manuscript is ready to be published.
🎉 10. It’s a Book!: Whether a publisher has released your book, or you’ve self-published you’ve accomplished something amazing! It’s time to celebrate!
